Waste disposal and the challenges we have.

The forthcoming significant increases in the landfill tax and the complementary development of landfill permit trading, are required to help deliver the targets in the Landfill Directive. The extension of the tax to other disposal routes such as incineration may also be required to ensure that waste minimisation and recycling are encouraged over disposal. Some of the revenue from waste taxation should be used to enforce the prevention of flytipping.

The amount of waste we generate is increasing every year but new legislation and rises in landfill tax will significantly increase the cost of managing waste in the future. The region must face this challenge, by moving up the waste management hierarchy, both to limit pollution and to save resources and excessive disposal costs.
•  If municipal waste quantities increase at the recent rate of 3% per year, disposal/treatment costs could double by 2020
•  Landfill tax will rise from its current level of £15 per tonne to £35 per tonne
•  The Landfill Directive requires the amount of biodegradable municipal waste (BMW) being landfilled by 2010 to be reduced to 75% of that produced in 1995, with further reductions to 50% in 2013 and 75% in 2020
•  The UK faces fines of £180 million per year if it fails to comply with the Landfill Directive

The above image shows what we should be doing with our waste to increase the levels of sustainability and reduce the costs of getting rid of your waste.
Ultimately however, you should look into ways of eliminating your waste to reduce your disposal cost.

If you need some advice on how you can reduce your waste and your disposal costs we are happy to help and give you advice.
