What is WEEE?

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment covers a variety of different items such as computers, televisions, fridges, freezers and microwaves. With strict recycling guidelines now in force, these items must be professionally handled by a licenced disposal company.

Every year an estimated 2 million tonnes of WEEE items are discarded by domestic, commercial and industrial markets across the United Kingdom. Whilst there are no confirmed figures as to how much of this is handled correctly through legal disposal routes, we are still clearly seeing and hearing about cases where large domestic appliances such as fridges, freezers and televisions are being illegally fly-tipped.

Most WEEE contains hazardous materials such as mercury, arsenic, lead and asbestos and as these are dangerous to humans, wildlife and the environment around us, it is so important to ensure that they are disposed of using an accredited company. This also enables any valuable metals to be recovered and reused where possible.

Here at BKP Waste & Recycling, we care deeply about the sustainability of the environment. Reducing the impact that the waste industry has on local wildlife is a mission we chose as a business; something our new owners GRG (Guernsey Recycling Group) strongly believe in as well.

GRG has the expertise to assist with innovative WEEE recycling options, sharing specific disposal routes and provide training for existing staff, enabling BKP to maximise the recyclability of each item and minimise the impact to landfill. Currently, over 80% of GRG's waste material is either recycled or recovered and it is BKP's aim to match or improve this percentage.

If you generate WEEE waste on a regular basis, BKP can provide a professional recycling service to help you do your bit for the environment in a legally compliant manner.
