Interceptor Cleaning – What It Is, Why It’s Needed and How You Can Arrange It

Able to separate water from any contaminants (such as oil, silt and dirt), a fully functioning interceptor is vital for any site hoping to keep their drainage system in perfect working order. As the nature of ongoing work sees a build-up of waste, to avoid blockages and pollution, undertaking frequent interceptor cleaning is an important part of keeping a drainage system working at its best.

If you’re looking for such a service, the team here at BKP can provide interceptor maintenance to keep your drainage system clean and in the best condition possible. Here, we’re going to outline a typical job we undertook for a long-term client – highlighting the works required, how we performed and the finished result.

Our Interceptor Cleaning Service In Action

The Project Brief

Already having long-term concerns over the performance of their oil interceptor, our client noticed that traces of hydrocarbons were appearing in their local watercourse. As a result, they wanted to investigate whether this was having a major negative impact on the local wildlife, as well as the public who use the watercourse.

Why Interceptor Maintenance Was Needed

Interceptors are generally installed to separate silt (sand/clay/any other sediment material), sludges and hydrocarbons (diesel, petrol and other oils) from water. By making use of gravity, the waste flows through the interceptors individual chambers which allows heavier wastes to separate and sink to the bottom of the tank (whilst lighter waste floats to the surface). As a result, there are traces of waste left over after the vast majority is released.

Due to the hazardous nature of certain waste streams (their effect on the local environment), the chambers of an interceptor will need to be cleansed by a professional waste management company (who use licensed treatment facilities), for legal disposal. Interceptors (or separators, as they’re often known), come in all shapes and sizes as they’re used to separate other waste streams, such as marble/granite cutting and grease, as well as fats and oils produced by industrial canteens and food processing facilities.

How We Cleaned Our Clients’ Waste Interceptors

As we’re dedicated to protecting the environment, the BKP team quickly got to work to understand the particular requirements of our client and reacquainted ourselves with their site. We quickly dispatched our licensed waste technicians, who attended with our de-watering tanker and they swiftly cleansed each chamber of the interceptor, ensuring that all containments were removed from the entirety of the vessel.

Once the interceptor cleaning was completed, our team entered the tank and jet washed all the internal walls and the floor to enable them to perform a detailed inspection of the unit. Their reported findings were supplemented by a camera inspection of the drainage outfall and the watercourse to confirm that there was no contamination.

As the Environment Agency have strict regulations on how treated waters are discharged into local watercourses, hefty fines can be incurred for those who do not comply. With this particular job, no evidence was found of trace contamination from the watercourse back to our client’s premises – a great result.

To ensure that they have the peace of mind in knowing that their waste streams do not contaminate their watercourse in the future, our client has arranged for pre-planned interceptor cleaning and associated drainage. “Another good job done” was their general feedback.

Whilst our services can be pre-booked for one-off or regular jobs, we also operate an emergency waste management service to minimise the risk of pollution – ensuring that every eventuality is prepared for.
