Ideally located between two key shipping ports in southern England, BKP Waste & Recycling Ltd have gained extensive experience in handling many food waste enquiries each year. In the past, most food items would be disposed of via landfill, where it rots and releases methane. Although methane is a damaging greenhouse gas; new technology has now enabled it to create energy.
As part of their commitment to the environment, BKP are now working closely with local and regional specialist anaerobic digestion facilities who have a series of biological processes in which micro-organisms break down biodegradable material in the absence of oxygen. The end-product of this process is biogas, which is combusted to generate electricity and heat. It can be processed into renewable natural gas and transportation fuels.
As an example, BKP received an enquiry recently to collect and dispose of boxed satsumas from a wind damaged shipping container. Whilst the actual container was damaged, the products inside were in reasonable condition so BKP were able to be decant the produce from the vessel and transport it for disposal at a nearby AD plant for processing; providing a greener outcome at a more cost-effective rate.
Sadly, not all jobs are that straight forward; particularly when food has passed a certain stage of deterioration and has caused significant damage to its containers; causing the waste stream to become a 'mushy mess' and unacceptable for the AD plant. In this case, the only option would then invariably be landfill but on a positive note, you can be assured that from now on BKP will explore every possible recycling and disposal outlet before considering landfill for their customers.
