What Is A Chemical?

Whilst we tend to think of chemicals as being undesirable and unnatural additions to things, such as artificial flavours in our foods, however chemicals are much broader than that. In fact, chemicals make up all of our foods as well as the air we breathe. It’s any substance consisting of matter, which includes liquids, solids, and gasses. Chemicals can be pure substances, also known as elements (For example, nitrogen, oxygen, or carbon) alternatively they could be a mixture of elements, making a solution, compound, or gas, such as the gas Carbon Dioxide, CO2, or the compound Water H20 (Dihydrogen Monoxide).

Harmful Properties Of Chemicals, What Dangerous Can Chemical Waste Pose?

Due to chemicals being a broad and diverse description of any substance consisting of matter, it includes clean drinking water, alongside more harmful chemical products which have the potential to be horrifically dangerous if mishandled or irresponsibly disposed of, such as herbicides or pesticides.

Due to the broad range of different chemicals and their diverse range of different properties, chemicals receive classifications or warning labels to help describe them better, these are known as GHS Hazard Pictograms which form part of the international Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals.

  • Physical Hazards
This category of hazardous includes explosives, flammable materials (including solids, liquids, gasses, mixtures, and aerosols), oxidizing agents, compressed or liquefied gases, or corrosive substances.

  • Health Hazards
This category includes hazards to health, and includes toxic chemicals, harmful chemicals, or chemicals which may cause health hazards.

  • Physical And Health Hazards
These chemicals include corrosive substances, flammables gases or explosives, and self-reactive substances and mixtures.

  • Environmental Hazards
This category of hazardous chemicals includes a range of environmental hazards with environmental toxicity properties, including both acute hazards to the environment and chronic hazards.

How Do You Safely Dispose Of Chemical Waste?

Due to the diverse nature of chemicals, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for chemical waste disposal. Each chemical or solution/compound must be disposed of in the manner best suited to the chemical in question. In some situations, a spill can be handled by members of staff who are on-site, such as the laboratory workers themselves. After all, being present where and when the spill takes place does provide them with a significant advantage with regards to response time and correct cleanup techniques for the chemical they are working with. However, there are occasions where the staff on-site are unable to safely or appropriately respond to the chemical waste, for example, if a large oil spillage occurs with lots of oil sludge waste to clear and dispose of, you’ll need a specialised waste clearance service. Here at BKP Group, we  can provide an oily sludge treatment service to ensure that as much oil and water is recovered as possible, with the amount of unusable waste being sent to landfill being reduced to as low volume as possible. This not only helps to protect the environment but also cuts down on the monetary costs.
